Advice for Business Newbies They Never Give You

By Peter Shankman

Many of us at NetIP are huge fans of Peter Shankman. An entrepreneur, author, speaker, and worldwide connector, Peter is recognized worldwide for radically new ways of thinking about Social Media, PR, marketing, advertising, creativity, and customer service. I am absolutely delighted to post perfect little excerpts from his blog for our NetIP readers.

Was explaining to someone just starting out in business about business travel, and it occurred to me – I was giving a piece of random advice NO ONE ever gives out – Tons of people give you “Traditional” business advice, but never the stuff that really helps you when you’re in the thick of it and need all the help you can get. So please, help me contribute to this in the comments. There should be a definitive list, and I’m going to make it.

Remember – Add your advice for business newbies in the comments!

  • A well-palmed $20 can get you and the client you’re trying to land out of 80% of the “Waiting for a table” you’re forced to do, and one well-palmed $50 can usually handle the other 20% Keep both NEW bills neatly folded in your wallet or purse at all times.
  • It’s never to early to join a frequent flier program, and it’s never too early to pick an airline to which to stay loyal.
  • People worth paying special attention to in your first job include your boss’s secretary, the person who books corporate travel, and the tech support guy. By “Special attention,” I mean remembering their birthdays, knowing their kids’ names, and genuinely taking an interest in their lives.

A marketing pundit for several national and international news channels, including Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC, Peter is frequently quoted in major media and trade publications, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Daily News, The Associated Press, Reuters, CNN, FOX News, and USA Today.

Born and raised in New York City, Peter still lives there with his two psychotic cats, Karma and NASA, who consistently deny his repeated requests to relinquish the couch. In the few hours of spare time Peter has per month, he’s a frequent runner, with 13 completed marathons, seven Olympic distance triathlons, two half-Ironman triathlons, and one full Ironman Triathlon to his credit, as well as a “B” licensed skydiver with over 220 jumps.

How much time do you spend letting your mind wander aimlessly into endless scenarios of negativity or of ineffectively daydreaming? The human, untrained mind loves to go off into worlds of imagination on a variety of inner journeys. One place it loves to go is into the world of projecting the negative outcome of a situation by letting fear rule. Another avenue often traveled is projecting in a negative way what you’re going to do if that other person doesn’t do what you want them to do. This is an anger based journey. In other words, you’re already setting the stage for something to go wrong. You may even be uses phrases such as “That’s all I need!” or, “It’s just my (bad) luck”, and other self-fulfilling prophecies.

In Finding Shangri La, you capture those negative statements and replace them with positive affirmations. You consciously choose to not allow your mind to go off like a wild horse out of the corral, or a monkey swinging from the trees. You take control. If you want to be successful, happy and purposeful, you start to use the Principle of Intention to harness your mind and clear it of sabotaging speech patterns that have become bad habits picked up from the contact with other negative people. Start today. Catch yourself. Change one of those undermining phrases. Instead of day dreaming, peer deeply into the spot between your eyebrows and visualize a successful outcome. Mentally tell yourself that whatever it is will turn out better than you could have ever expected. Visualize success, prosperity, solutions to problems. Do this over and over again until you, like a true Yogi, are controlling your environment in a positive way. Believe…….

Worms, Early Birds, and You

Weekly coaching exclusively for NetIP from life coach Marlene McCallum! Each week, life coach Marlene will talk about how to get the most of your every day, and learn how to create a successful action plan that can be applied to any project - personal or professional.

The early bird gets the worm

I know, it is tempting. Just squeeze in a little bit more, one more teeny tiny task… and then IT happens. Late, late, late! Frustrated, disappointed, confidence down the tubes. I’ve been there, friends. Personal productivity and time management are a confidence game! One sure-fire way to feel confident… arrive early. Conversely, one sure-fire way to feel like a loser… be late.

I once had a boss who told this story… “Marlene, every time I am late to a new client meeting ~ I spend the first 45 minutes of an hour long meeting just making up for the fact that I was late.” YIKES! Sound familiar?

The most miraculous thing that happens when we are early… we get to be our authentic, powerful and fully expressed selves! No need to be apologetic, “make-up for” etc. Give yourself the gift of powerful YOU! Practice being 10-15 minutes early once a day for anything… and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Personal true story: One time I was 15 minutes early to a seminar (wow!) and that gave me enough time to let a car take its time backing out of a tight spot ~ I had so much time to be patient and generous (which felt like a gift in and of itself)… and that person turned around and paid for my entire parking bill that day! Now, if that is a worm… I’ll take it!

Are you an “almost on-time / few minutes late bird” longing to be an early bird? Or are you a life-long early bird who reaps the benefits of it daily? I’d love to hear from you… Come share your stories, thoughts and suggestions on Most Powerful Life’s Facebook Fan Page.

The take-away: It is hard to come up with a tasty version of a worm. (no, I’m kidding, that’s not the take-away). We’ve all heard it before, the famous saying, “The Early Bird Gets the Worm” but what I’ve found is that the early bird gets way more than that. As a reformed “barely on time – usually a minute or two late” bird :) … I can tell you… all kinds of miracles can happen in those 10 – 15 minutes one arrives early.!!

Tip to practice this week: Stop where you are. Put the task down (even if it isn’t done). Do what it takes to arrive 15 minutes early to one (any) event each day!
