Building Business − A Regular Anthology of Professional and Business Development Articles

A collection of article summaries from various sources (with links to actual articles) focused on Professional and Business Development.  We’ve collected them in one spot, so you can easily scan, review and apply to your career and business.

A Better Family Business Succession (SmartBrief) – Whether you plan to leave your family business to one child or sell it to a third party, open communication with your children and family is key, writes Louis Pashman, who breaks down three possible succession scenarios.

Protect your personal assets when seeking business loans (SmartBrief) – Many small-business loans require a personal guarantee that can put your family’s assets, including your home, at risk. If you must agree to such a guarantee, lawyer Richard Reinis offers some advice: Tell your spouse, limit your exposure, narrow the conditions for enforcement of the guarantee and take out insurance in case of a worst-case scenario.

Good innovators know how to figure things out (SmartBrief) – At its core, innovation is simply the art of figuring things out, writes Dennis Stauffer. That means that the basic skills of good innovators are transferable to almost any situation or problem. “The more skilled we become at figuring out, the more likely we are to find success in any endeavor,” Stauffer writes.

Advice for getting started, from an old hand (SmartBrief) – Launching a venture can be “exhausting, ego shattering and (at times) infuriating,” writes serial entrepreneur Farid Naib, but it’s also “one of the greatest thrills in my life.” To anyone thinking of taking the plunge, he says to go for it, be ready to fail and be prepared for growing pains. And don’t be shy about asking for help, he advises.

Is it time for your business’ checkup? (SmartBrief) – As 2011 nears the halfway mark, it’s a good time to take a step back to evaluate your finances, operations and what you could be doing better, say experts. “Give yourself time to make some adjustments,” said Christina Cardenas. Other experts advise examining personnel needs and inventory as well as accounting and financial processes.

Where to find government money for your business (SmartBrief) The federal government awards cash grants to small businesses every year, but unless you operate in a handful of industries such as biotech, health care or clean energy, you’re better off pursuing state and local awards, writes Louise Lee, who offers tips for getting your share of government grants.

5 Tips For Deal-Making Under India’s New M&A Regime (Law360) – Even after an extensive last-minute rewrite of the regulations, India’s brand new merger control regime — which went into effect this month — will force dealmakers to live with some amount of uncertainty, experts say, at least until regulators tackle a few test cases. Until then, experts say companies should keep these five things in mind when negotiating tie-ups that could have an impact in India.

I’m Overwhelmed – a feeling or weapon?
When we express that we are overwhelmed to others – often times it has a deeper purpose that we are unaware of.  So rather than accidentally beating up others with your to-do’s, your stress and what is overwhelming you, take a look at some things that may be going on underneath the surface.

Compassion and Empathy – Talking about being overwhelmed and displaying it for others is sometimes about just wanting someone to understand your situation. But if you unknowingly attack that person with all of your “stuff” you are not likely to get what it is you are truly after. Look for yourself. Do you need compassion and someone to just say, “Wow, you have a lot going on!” If so, be straight and ask for just that. If you don’t identify it and ask for what you need ~ you take the gamble that you may not get it!

Acknowledgment – It is natural to need acknowledgment. (some of you may need to read that a few times!) Is talking about and displaying your frenzied overwhelm a strange method of asking for acknowledgment? Maybe it is as simple as someone telling you “great job!” Tip: If this is you… go to the person who you have been doing this with and explain to them what you have been (unconsciously) doing. Apologize for any bad feelings and ask him/her if they would be willing to tell you “great job!” Who knows… they might need to hear it, too! ;)

I don’t like to say ‘no’ – The best offense is a good defense, yes? Well, sorta! Perhaps you display how overwhelmed you feel to keep requests “at bay.” I mean if you are THAT busy… surely no one in their right mind will ask you to do MORE! Saying ‘no’ is an important part of relationships. Everyone survives ‘no’ and it is much more authentic than using the whirl and swirl of overwhelm to keep people (and their requests) away. Tip: If this is you… Identify who you do this with and come up with (in advance – like right now!) some ways to say no that work for you. “I’d love to but I can’t take that on right now.” (practice saying these things lovingly). Often times we think “no” has to sound hard and harsh. A ‘no’ can be as neutral or as loving as you want!

Other – Look for yourself. To whom do you display being overwhelmed to the most? What is underneath? What are you really trying to tell them or ask them for? It is exhausting to have to frenzy yourself just to display how overwhelmed you feel… especially when there is something more authentic and important underneath.

Ready to put down the sword? I’d love to hear from you… come share your stories, thoughts and suggestions on Most Powerful Life’s Facebook Fan Page.

The take-away: In the ‘world of sports’ the best offense may be a good defense… but in relationships this same strategy doesn’t make for winning ‘teams’.

Tip to practice this week: Put away your Inner Samurai. Reduce your feelings of being “overwhelmed” by identifying what its actual purpose is in your life. You might be surprised.

It’s not about how you feel!
The only guarantee when it comes to “feelings” is that there are NO guarantees! One minute you may feel like going to the gym and the next minute you don’t. One minute you may feel like calling that potential customer and the next minute you don’t. (the list goes on and on, right?) Taking action based on how we feel is an exhausting, dramatic, roller-coaster ride that produces wildly unpredictable and often disappointing results.

A commitment, on the other hand, is like your own personal North Star that guides you while sailing the sometimes dark and stormy seas. Taking action that is consistent with your commitments is like steering your ship in the direction of that North Star.

Practice making commitments and then taking action that is consistent with those commitments. Even if you do this MOST of the time … you will produce far better results.

And a BIG bonus… you will know yourself as someone who is able to take action even when you “don’t wanna.” A confidence builder and a key success ingredient. (not to mention – a ticket to a low-drama life!)

What is your North Star and when do you set sail? I’d love to hear from you… come share your stories, thoughts and suggestions on Most Powerful Life’s Facebook Fan Page.

The take-away: Clarify your commitments in life and then take actions that are consistent with those commitments… with minimal attention on how you “feel” about those actions. Expect your feelings to change from moment to moment!

Tip to practice this week: When it comes to producing results… pay less attention to how you “feel” and more attention to your North Star!

High IQ… Mega Time-Waster?

I remember sitting in a college psychology class when the professor said, “Now is the time when you should begin to think for yourselves. Don’t just accept what you are told — you are a free-thinker!” And, with that bit of advice… I was off and running! I didn’t JUST accept anything anymore. I analyzed it, thought it through and played devil’s advocate with anything I could get a hold of. I prided myself on my ability to think through all aspects of things. Gone were the “immature” days of taking things at face value, following instructions as they were written, and other forms of naivete! Hah!

Did you have a moment like that in your life? When you decided you were no longer going to take things at face value? A moment when the “OVER-thinking” began?

Adults often take this concept too far (without even realizing it) and then find themselves OVER-thinking, OVER-deliberating and OVER-examining every little option… simply because… well… simply because we can (and are supposed to?)!

You know me well enough at this point to know that by no means am I suggesting that you let go of your intelligence :) but I am offering that it is ok to re-embrace some of those gifts from childhood, like… trust, following instructions and even a little naiveté at times. (yep, I said it… there it is… naiveté!)

So, listen… if you choose to think over your options (totally, fine!) just be sure that it is truly a choice and truly where you choose to spend your time. It is only when we auto-pilot and do it ALL the time (just because) that it becomes a mega-time waster!

Where could you limit the tendency to “over-think” and save yourself time & energy? I’d love to hear from you… come share your stories, thoughts and suggestions on Most Powerful Life’s Facebook Fan Page.

The take-away: Being a creative, outside-the-box thinker is often well-regarded but just as with anything… too much of a good thing comes with a price. Over-thinking something (just because you can) isn’t necessarily the best use of your time.

Tip to practice this week: Choose when to “Think it Through” and when to just “Call It!”

When People are like ketchup bottles

Are you someone who has made valiant (even heroic!) attempts at making a difference with others? Perhaps, if you are like me, you have taken on some pretty “tough cookies” and perhaps, too, they are people that you care deeply about.

At times it may have seemed like they even wanted to stay stuck… but you hung in there! They are offered paths to “escape” yet keep going down the same one… and then get angry when someone points it out. It is hard to watch people do the same thing over and over again and expect a different result.

The thing I would offer you (and this has helped me in my profession, too ~ when I felt like I wasn’t making the type of difference I wanted to make with a client…) is that people are like ketchup bottles. Sometimes we are the ones who “loosen” the bottle cap and sometimes we are the one who comes along and pops it off after others have tried before us.

You never know at what point you meet someone along his or her path. Some bottle tops require many twists and tries and others just come right off… but trust,… you have loosened that cap… and it is ok to stop twisting for awhile and let someone else have a turn.

What would it be like if you had permission to stop “twisting” and were able to trust the difference you’ve already made? I’d love to hear from you… Come share your stories, thoughts and suggestions on Most Powerful Life’s Facebook Fan Page.

The take-away: If you have ever spent time and energy trying to make a difference for another and have felt frustrated and wondered if your efforts made a difference… you may need to let go of the “cap” and stop “twisting.”

Tip to practice this week: It is ok to stop “twisting” for a while and let someone else have a turn. Practice trusting that you have already made a difference ~ whether you can “see” the change or not.

Did this Tip have particular meaning or value to you? Do you have questions for the Coach?  I’d love to hear from you! Email me.

Worms, Early Birds, and You

Weekly coaching exclusively for NetIP from life coach Marlene McCallum! Each week, life coach Marlene will talk about how to get the most of your every day, and learn how to create a successful action plan that can be applied to any project - personal or professional.

The early bird gets the worm

I know, it is tempting. Just squeeze in a little bit more, one more teeny tiny task… and then IT happens. Late, late, late! Frustrated, disappointed, confidence down the tubes. I’ve been there, friends. Personal productivity and time management are a confidence game! One sure-fire way to feel confident… arrive early. Conversely, one sure-fire way to feel like a loser… be late.

I once had a boss who told this story… “Marlene, every time I am late to a new client meeting ~ I spend the first 45 minutes of an hour long meeting just making up for the fact that I was late.” YIKES! Sound familiar?

The most miraculous thing that happens when we are early… we get to be our authentic, powerful and fully expressed selves! No need to be apologetic, “make-up for” etc. Give yourself the gift of powerful YOU! Practice being 10-15 minutes early once a day for anything… and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Personal true story: One time I was 15 minutes early to a seminar (wow!) and that gave me enough time to let a car take its time backing out of a tight spot ~ I had so much time to be patient and generous (which felt like a gift in and of itself)… and that person turned around and paid for my entire parking bill that day! Now, if that is a worm… I’ll take it!

Are you an “almost on-time / few minutes late bird” longing to be an early bird? Or are you a life-long early bird who reaps the benefits of it daily? I’d love to hear from you… Come share your stories, thoughts and suggestions on Most Powerful Life’s Facebook Fan Page.

The take-away: It is hard to come up with a tasty version of a worm. (no, I’m kidding, that’s not the take-away). We’ve all heard it before, the famous saying, “The Early Bird Gets the Worm” but what I’ve found is that the early bird gets way more than that. As a reformed “barely on time – usually a minute or two late” bird :) … I can tell you… all kinds of miracles can happen in those 10 – 15 minutes one arrives early.!!

Tip to practice this week: Stop where you are. Put the task down (even if it isn’t done). Do what it takes to arrive 15 minutes early to one (any) event each day!
